Younger Generations and Technological Influence

Is it just me or are kids today becoming more and more addicted to technology. In all seriousness, I wonder how they would survive back in the 50s and 60s when there was barely television. I also feel then increase in technology has a connection to the younger generations of children and childhood obesity because so many kids today would rather sit at home and play video games on their PlayStation 3, Skype/oovoo with friends (rather than visit them, and still sit around and watch TV! Technology has made many generations become dependent but especially the younger one's who I think could not survive without cellphones, ipods, laptops, or gaming stations. What ever happened to the good ol' days of just hanging outside and playing a sport? or anything outdoors for that matter! Technology, while is good, has its bad side too; which could generate a massive following of soon to be closet cases/shut-ins to the world outside because they have to be on the computer 24/7.... Just an opinion :)

Blogging, Good or Bad?

Did you ever wonder if blogs are good to read? I do believe some are but the more credtited sources are probably the best to stick to because you never know who or what is posting. It could be any kind of information and there are people out there that will believe anything. Just the other day, I saw online that Megan Fox is a man! is it true? Nope. But this is just an example. Do you think blogs are safe? Is anything really safe anymmore?! haha i have no clue when it comes to the internet anyway.

Good Luck

Influence of Technology, in the modern age

Today I saw a 5 year old girl with a cell phone. I thought, "Wow, I wasn't allowed to have a mobile phone until I was a sophmore in highschool." When I saw that, I thought today's society and younger generations are overly influenced by technology. Almost everyone of all ages has a cell phone and not just any cell phones, 3G and 4G iphones! Which might I mention are constantly being updated so there is really no point in buying one when and even newer and better phone will come out in a month or less! I think today we are trying too hard to be advanced in technology. I can see how it can benefit in health and sciences but things like computers, tvs, videogames, etc..have taken over many young kids social lives. I wonder if one day, everyone will just be consumed by the use of technology and become so dependent that no one leaves there houses! Hmmm. What do you think?

Good Luck

Youtube

Youtube has become a hit sensation over the years and even offered some good career opportunities. Do you ever think that youtube is a safe place for kids under 18 or can be just as bad as facebook or twitter...due to exposure. I personally have seen some messed up things on youtube which can definitely alter a child's mind; with the endless amount of swearing and sexual jokes, not to mention partial nudity. So I'm curious, do you think your okay with your kids accessing youtube?

Twitter...Why?

In my personal opinion I do not see the point in Twitter other than for people to follow
celebrities in their daily lives with 190 characters or less. I feel it is a big waste of time
just because there really is not much to do on it. The premise of it reminds AOL
instant messaging. It, to me, is not really a creative site. I feel it took the idea of instant
messaging, expanded it to a website and shortened how many characters you can use
per conversation and "tweet." Yet it still is very popular today. I think it could be do to
the obsession of social networking in our societies. Just about everyone has a Facebook,
Myspace, and now Twitter. I wonder how much longer these websites will be popular
before something new comes along. Hmmmm.

What do you think?

What do you think?

Would you let your kid have a Facebook or a Myspace at any age? or Would you restrict them to having one at, lets say, 16? What age is appropriate for a kid or teen to have a social networking account? I feel that any kid over the age of 14 can have an account because by then they should be well aware of the dangers of internet and be taught not to talk to strangers online. This topic is really up to the parents to teach their kids about the dangers of the internet! There have been many child abductions from these sites and if a child/teen wants one then the parent must make sure their child/teen is responsible enough to have one and parents should monitor their child's use. Speaking of that I do actually agree parents should have a Facebook/Myspace as well, it only ensures safety for their kids and helps teach parents about sites such as Facebook and Myspace and keep them up to date on the latest internet usages. No harm in that!

Social Networking, thing of the past?

there is one thing about social networking, it is not a guarantee it will stay around forever or in a better term: stay the same. I have noticed over the years how many websites like myspace and facebook change to keep up with the pace of society and keep many people interested. I wonder how much more could they possibly change before they become obsolete to something else? There could be a whole other form of internet socializing soon to be made! We have no idea...other than technology is rapidly advancing. I feel it is only a matter of time before these internet sites like facebook and myspace will become a thing of the past, much like how listserv was treated. People move onto bigger and better things now. I guess it is a wait and see if Social Networking sites will last or not. Hmm...

Blogs Good or Bad?

Any and every person can have a blog and say what ever they want. To be honest, is that really all that helpful/useful if someone goes on their blog and constantly offends/misleads people to believe some information that is not true? No it is not but everyone has the right to free speech, so it is an issue to deal with. After all, people don't HAVE to follow a rotten person if they don't want to. I feel, though, blogs are a very effective way to let out emotions that you can't on day to day basis or even if you are not comfortable telling someone in person about how you feel. Writing is an excellent way to express how one feels; especially if they are not entirely on the artistic side of talent. Everyone does deserve to let out how they feel, much like a diary, yet very open for all to see. A blog can lead a person to get to know one another very deeply and profoundly, you would probably never guess that person felt that way or experienced what they have in life. Blogs are outlets that should be shared, have people express themselves through words and emotion. Not everyone will be liked on a Blog but at least it serves the purpose to help clarify thoughts and emotions by letting them out!

Now go get a blog and start writing!

Good Luck!

Chat Rooms Dangerous For Kids?

Chat rooms and IMs have been and still are very popular with any age groups today. Children as young as 8 have used chat rooms and IMs not actually knowing the dangers it could lead. If any one is a parent out there, monitoring computer usage for kids under the age of, in my opinion, 14. In fact did you know that "89% of sexual solicitations are made in either chat rooms or Instant Messages and 20% of children age 10-17 have been solicited sexually online; that's 1 out of every 5 kids," (Cyber Safety Statistics), I will post the link to this information and more facts about chat rooms below!

The fact is, there are sick people in the world and anyone can have access to the internet. There is a good chance a person like that can talk to and even convince your kid to see them, all through chat rooms/IMs. It is not that safe unless kids are taught other wise to NEVER talk to strangers and do their homework before considering going on a chat room/IM. There has been a case around where I live, where a elementary school teacher was caught looking up child porn on his home and school computer. Thankfully he was caught and lost his job! There are sick people out there who do, do these things. Some go as far as to try and obtain a child. There are many cases out there of kids being sexually solicited online and even abducted! "9 out of 10 parents will never know that any inappropriate contact has occurred" and "14% have actually met face to face with a person they have met on the Internet." Be careful, be safe.

Good Luck

Yahoo Groups. Is it useful?

A Yahoo group is used for, "your family, friends you see every summer, business associates, your book group, etc. — that uses Yahoo! Groups to privately share info, images, ideas and more — on the web." It is very intriguing, mainly because it is free and spam is blocked! No specific programs need either. It is a very secure way to interact and share information with friends and family without worrying about the creepy people out there that stalk Facebook, Myspace, etc. And is better than Email because spam is 100% blocked! While you still can communicate just as quickly! I would say after reading up on this application on Yahoo, I will for sure use it because it seems very trustworthy and I already have a Yahoo account.

I highly recommend Yahoo Groups if you ever want privacy to chat with friends and family, without spam and ignorant strangers bothering you!

Listserv....Useful?

For a little while now I have been using listserv for an English online class and at first I was skeptical because I have never used anything like this before and am not use to change. Ha! But seriously, listserv's actually have a very good purpose of communication. I have read an article called "Topics for peer to peer listserv postings" and have come across a lot of information on how listserv is still useful. It has mentioned that listserv can help foreign language teachers K-8 to communicate with colleagues who share similar interests and access good information. These teachers use Nandu listserv which, "...provides a forum of information exchange and discussion about K-8 language education." I feel listserv's like this one, are very beneficial for anyone; especially in education. It is a way for someone to get in contact with any given person, receive or acquire knowledge of a topic, and discuss it on a forum with other people, who agree or disagree. It engages a person to become more active in participation and knowledge seeking. I feel listserv's are only beneficial, and easy to use too!

Social Networking replacing Emailing

For a while now, people have used email and it used to be a very fascinating thing to have. But in today's society, people often think spam/junk mail when they hear email. I know for one thing I do not use my email often at all because of all the spam I have. I didn't even sign up for half the stuff they send me! Anyways, I go on Facebook instead and talk to my friends there. It is quicker and easier and more entertaining than emailing. A lot of people use Facebook for that reason. Today it is much quicker to talk to your friends on Facebook than trying to call their phone! Believe me there are tons of Facebook addicts out there and some of which are starting at young ages like eight years old.

I feel as though, for now, Facebook replaced emailing but soon something will replace Facebook. There will always be upgrades to technology which is why there are new social networking sites (from Myspace to Facebook: upgrade), newer phones with more GB on them, newer computers/laptops being created. Actually they do have a touch screen PC out now and my friend bought it already. The point is that, internet along with other technologies, is always changing and right now Facebook is the main use of communication over email but some day, someone will come up with a new social networking site or even better! and Facebook would become a thing of the past.

Read a great blog referring to this, it is more about the positives of Facebook use today! I recommend it especially if you do not have a Facebook yet and want one. Remember about Facebook, that if you do not set your privacy settings, everyone can see what you are posting on there! Be careful.

Internet Blogging/Chatting/Social Networking...Dangerous?

In our society today, any person can use the internet, despite their age, gender, race, etc.
I feel, even though I love the internet, it is not a safe place for kids to be. I can understand
use of internet for research but when it comes to Facebook, Myspace, AIM, etc... most kids
do not know what they are getting into. There are billions of people in the world and most, if
not all, can use the internet. Not every person out there is safe or stable. There are sick people
out there who will contact young kids in anyway for their sick gain. I feel the internet should be
supervised for kids under 13 years old because there have been many cases where children have
gone online without parental supervision and talked to one of those pedophiles.

I read a blog here http://www.crime-research.org/articles/Fried10/ and it talks about how the
internet is not so safe after all. It mentions, "In a recent study conducted by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), "by 2002 some 45 million children will be surfing the net." That is a scary estimate and that is only back in 2002! The estimate by now has to be much larger. This blog also mentions about "chicken hawks" which are pedophiles who go on online chats looking for under-aged victims. It truly is disgusting. I feel in todays society, however happy I am about us technologically advancing, i think parents need to step up and watch over their kids, for their safety because even though it may just be a computer to you or harmless fun, it could be potentially dangerous to your kid's life.

How blogs are being misused..

Many bloggers out there, today, love to design and personally edit their own blog to what they like. Whether it would be the text color to the background image. It is whatever appeals to the writer's senses. But, what about the readers?

I read Jacob Nielsen's "Weblog Usability: The Top Ten Design Mistakes" and he has made some good points about how blogging can be so insightful and it is such a wonderful thing to have to express yourself. It can even be as simple as posting a link; not having to have to do so much research. Sometimes readers love something short and to the point about a topic. The first mistake most "unofficial" bloggers make is they do not add a biography. Without a biography how will people know who you are? And if they like your work, it is only beneficial to put yourself out there

According to Jacob Nielsen, "Even if you don't have formal credentials, readers will trust you more if you're honest about that fact, set forth your informal experience, and explain the reason for your enthusiasm." Which is true, honesty is the best policy, even in writing. You do not have to make a blog ridiculously long for it to be a good blog. Even the shortest of blogs like mentioned above (just using a link) can be successful in gaining readers. There are many good tips in "Weblog Usability: The Top Ten Design Mistakes." It talks about adding serious headlines instead of goofy ones, adding a photo of yourself for reference and recognition, etc. I recommend it to any person who thinks they need tips on enhancing their blogging skills. (I will post the link to his article below, for all to read.)

Now, to sum up everything mentioned, a blog is not just there for colorful backgrounds and cutesy text. It is a gateway to your creativity or passion in writing. It is something to get you started in life, if you do want to become a serious writer. Yet you do not HAVE to write about serious topics/genres. There are many genres of writings out there like  variations of fiction, sci-fi, romance, poetry, etc. it is just the fact that a writer should present themselves as mature, understanding, and organized, if they want to be taken seriously.

Good luck

What makes a piece of writing horrible

There are many mistakes writers can make and they are often clear to the reader. What makes a piece of writing horrible is anything from fragments, misspellings to getting one's emotions too entwined with what they are writing about. When you are writing, you have to consider the reader's needs and how they will respond to your work.

Some people will most likely get offended if anything negative is written, directed towards their religion or faith, culture, etc. You have to watch your words and express opinions in the most appropriate ways to avoid such conflicts. Just like Jen McClure's "A is for "Authenticity," Not "Asshole" - A Call for Civility in the Blogosphere mentions, "C'mon people, being "authentic" doesn't mean you should say whatever comes into your head. And, just because you can use your blog (or podcast or online video) to say whatever you want about whomever you want, doesn't mean that you should." I entirely agree with this statement. Censorship is a must for a good piece of writing.

Any person has the potential to be a good writer, however, there are steps you must take to become one. First, you cannot just say what comes to the top of your head. You must have your thoughts organized, clear, and concise, in order to be a good writer. If you are skipping from one idea or topic to the next without any transitions, writing thoughts without fully thinking them through, getting emotions involved, which will offend your readers. Make an argument make sense and factual, not offensive, all over the place, and too emotional. Creativity is optional but it helps with writing as well. Writing can also be bad if it is boring. Having a sense of creativity or ability to make a topic, whether you like it or hate it, somewhat interesting is a gift and it does help out a lot in the long run.
